In the Filoli rose garden.

John Muir wrote that “everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” Spending a day breathing in the beauty of these gardens was that kind of healing balm.

But it’s not beauty vs. bread. The bee blithely collects pollen from the heart of this rose, reminding us that the messy details of work, food production, and sex are beautiful at their very core.
