Wild dock.
Also insisting on attention along the trail, and drawing a sharp contrast to the riot of green around it, is a variety of wild dock (genus Rumex). Well known among foragers, dock’s stalks of edible seeds turn reddish brown as the seeds mature.
I love the brown fullness of the dock seed stalk as the robust plant faces the dry season to come and the winter to follow. It has marshaled all its resources towards this bursting moment of fertility and heat, as all living things do.
