Sequoia sempervirens root base.
Armstrong Woods is a wonderful place to experience the tallest trees in the world, the coast redwoods. They thrive in the coastal fog, taking water in through their leaves and bark. Their native wet soils have fewer nutrients than the trees need, so they depend heavily on the community of the entire redwood forest. The roots do not go deep, but spread a wide distance from the trunk, interweaving and fusing with other redwoods. Each tree is held up by the entire community. This community expertly recycles aged trees to support the growth of the next generation… And here and there, a mature tree falls in the winter storms, uprooting its base and providing a spectacle for passersby.
