Self-portrait with (photo of) Dave (2018).
Today is the fourth anniversary of the day Dave died. This is the first image I created when I returned to making art after my husband died in 2016. I couldn’t even begin to make work for well over a year, but when the time arrived, images came out in a torrent. You can still see the grief in my face, the tentativeness and exhaustion of soldiering on, as I tried bravely to face a future that looked so different from the one I’d planned. I was driven to express a pain that was beyond words.
I’ve been alone for quite a while now. I’m less exhausted, despite the ravages of 2020.
No one escapes loss. If you are on this journey, this image is for you. It's part of a portfolio called The Path of Solitude, which you can view in full here.
