A Unique Motherhood

A Unique Motherhood

Many years ago, my husband Dave and I adopted a baby from foster care.

This choice fit who we were.

We felt prepared.

But there was no way we could prepare for this our daughter’s confounding disabilities.

Disrupted attachment.

In utero drug and alcohol exposure.

The impacts unfolded over many years.

When she was seventeen, Dave died. Our family was devastated by the loss.

My daughter is now 26.

It’s nine years since we lost her dad.

Through twenty-five years of raising her, I have needed to make work about nurturing this unique being. And I needed to respect her privacy.

This is my story.
